Conclusion

In cases of a large tumor mass like this in a young child the most likely diagnosis is a neuroblastoma or a nephroblastoma. The mass had a tendency to displace and deform the kidney more than invade the kidney. The calcifications and the extension of the mass along the retroperitoneal structures and encasing the vessels are more characteristic for a neuroblastoma. The child was referred to a pediatric oncological center where the mass indeed proved to be a neuroblastoma
